Rebuilding Coastal Ecosystems
The Plant Nursery at 1501 Jourdan Ave in the Lower 9th Ward grows native plants to support wetlands restoration across Southeast Louisiana. By fostering community engagement, the nursery provides the essential plants needed to rebuild and stabilize Louisiana’s coastal ecosystems. It’s a community-driven effort that nurtures both the environment and the people who care for it.

The Nursery is a community green space which is open to the public 24/7. We welcome our neighbors to enjoy the shade, use the picnic tables, and check out our new public water fountain complete with a bottle filler!

Impact & Community Access
In 2023, the nursery produced 15,000 native plants, which were used in restoration efforts throughout the region. It also hosted educational programs, engaging over 200 students and volunteers in the process of environmental stewardship. In 2024, we added picnic tables, a public water fountain, and ground-leveling mulched paths to make this green space more accessible to the public for use as a peaceful gathering place.
Common Ground Relief Wetlands LLC has operated a tree farm and plant nursery since March 2009. Our new state licensed nursery facility is located in the Lower Ninth Ward, several blocks from our offices and short term volunteer housing facility. Common Ground Relief uses this one-half acre site as a working nursery, demonstration site, job training resource and educational facility. In addition to growing all the plant material for its programs, Common Ground Relief sells and donates trees to parish, state and federal agencies for large-scale wetlands restoration projects. The nursery is open to the public for learning and enjoyment.
At the Plant Nursery, we believe in the power of community-based action to restore our vital coastal ecosystems. Through education and collaboration, we grow native plants that support wetlands restoration while fostering a deeper connection between people and the environment. The nursery is a space for empowerment and agency—where everyone from students to tourists can play an active role in protecting Louisiana’s fragile ecosystems, making climate action both accessible and deeply personal.
