Common Ground Relief creates resilient Gulf Coast communities through habitat restoration, environmental education, and essential community support services in the Lower 9th Ward.

Mutual Aid and Community Programming

We believe that food security and mutual aid are essential to community health, alongside clean air and water and thriving ecosystems. We also believe that direct material support to the community is a moral imperative and is invaluable in community engagement with our mission.

Wetlands Restoration

CGR has been revegetating a 12-parish region across Southeast Louisiana since 2007. CGR staff works with state parks and land owners to design and implement wetlands restoration projects focused on revegetation of appropriate native species along ridge forests, bottomland hardwood swamps, marshes, and iris bogs.

Grand Bayou Indian
Village

The Grand Bayou Village program supports the Atakapa-Ishak/Chawasha tribal community in restoring their marshlands and preserving their cultural heritage through native grass plantings and climate resilience efforts

Free Food Pantry

Our pantry ensures equitable food access in the Lower 9th Ward, providing fresh, nutritious groceries to those in need with dignity and respect. We accept donations from local businesses to reduce food waste.

Anita Roddick Advocacy Center

Common Ground Relief Provides a community-meeting place for residents of the Greater New Orleans area at the Anita Roddick Advocacy Center, which is located at the Common Ground Relief office in the Lower 9th Ward.

Environmental
Programming

Through wetlands restoration and stewardship, Common Ground Relief empowers communities to resist climate challenges while reconnecting with nature and fostering resilience.

Central Wetlands Reforestation Collective

CGR is committed to planting 1,500 native trees and 2,000 plugs of marsh grasses each year for the next 4 years in the Central Wetlands Unit which spans 30,000 acres between Orleans and St. Bernard Parish.

Native Plant Nursery and Cabane Coypu Learning Facility

Rooted in collaboration, our nursery grows native plants that restore Louisiana's coastlines, offering opportunities for everyone to join in and take action. Neighbors are welcome to enjoy this green space and public water fountain 24/7

Disaster Response

Standing up to face climate disasters together, Common Ground Relief mobilizes volunteers and resources to protect Southeast Louisiana and support community recovery.
