Charles Chaisson
Secretary
Charles Chaisson first learned about Common Ground Relief through fellow board member Blaise Pezold, who frequently posted about the organization's coastal revegetation work. Intrigued by their efforts to combat climate change in a tangible way, Charles became increasingly interested in volunteering. He found it inspiring to see an organization making coastal restoration and community service approachable, which counteracts the pervasive climate doomerism and injects a dose of realism and optimism into the conversation. He appreciates how CGR combines community involvement in land stewardship with vital services like the free pantry and disaster relief, which he finds both admirable and heartwarming.
In early 2023, Charles had the opportunity to volunteer with CGR during their final marsh planting of the year. He vividly recalls stepping into the marsh and feeling his foot sink into the mud up to his knee, briefly questioning his decision but quickly reassured by experienced volunteers. The day, marked by teamwork, camaraderie, and group chants of "Grass! Grass! Grass!" led by Josh Benitez, became a memorable and cathartic experience for him. It reinforced his belief that tackling climate issues requires dedicated effort from both communities and governments. For Charles, stewardship means creating systems that foster empathy with each other and the land, prioritizing ecosystem regeneration over exploitation. As a visual artist and occasional adjunct professor, he believes in using art to educate and inspire communities to appreciate and act towards maintaining healthy ecosystems.
