Images from nearly three years of Recovery and Rebuild

Volunteers from Global Hope have been a constant source of support for Common Ground Relief and, in particular, the rebuild of the Lower Ward. Most recently, Global Hope has collaborated with Common Ground Relief to ensure the rebuilding of Reverend Adam's Church.

Common Ground Relief is incredibly grateful to Global Hope not just for their relentless support, but also for producing this short video, which charts two and half years of the volunteer recovery and rebuild effort in New Orleans.

Common Ground would further like to express gratitude for the sacrifices that these courageous and dedicated volunteers continue to make by engaging in these solidarity efforts. The global community benefits by people coming together, and working together to promote hope and civic responsibility.
Linda Winslow: You are the Lucky Winner!

Congratulations Linda Winslow!

Ms. Winslow purchased the winning ticket (#9002609) for two round trip tickets to New Orleans, and accommodations in the French Quarter during Carnival season. Common Ground Relief thanks David Zimmerman, who donated the trip for this successful fundraiser, and all of those who purchased raffle tickets.

We look forward to your visit to the Crescent City, and hope you enjoy the festivities that only New Orleans can provide. During this Mardi Gras season, Common Ground Relief continues to work diligently in the rebuilding and advocacy for residents affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Common Ground depends on creative endeavors, like Mr. Zimmerman's donation and Ms. Winslow's participation in our raffle to keep our projects alive.

Stepping Out On Faith

To our Common Grounders--volunteers and donors and collaborative friends--as always, we need money to keep it going. We've had an amazing year and now with <a href:"http://www.makeitrightnola.org/">Make It Right at our doorstep and a training program in the works, we're still busy doing what needs to be done and we need your help.

We hope you'll read our end of year letter and make a donation to Common Ground. Starting January 1st, Common Ground, utilizing its new non-profit status, will become an independent entity and all the work will be done, on the ground in the Lower 9th Ward. We think this is an exciting time and we hope you'll continue to journey along with us.

Common Ground Community Adoption Program

Because of systematic political and economic neglect as well as the threat of rampant disenfranchisement, New Orleans’ working class and poor communities are in dire need of immediate support in their rebuilding efforts.

The vast delays on insurance policy pay-outs and the foot-dragging bureaucracy that mires the Federal Disaster Fund (Road Home) grants result in residents’ inability to repair and/or rebuild their homes.

The City has implemented imminent Health Threat ordinances and a so-called “Good Neighbor Program” that directs its
health & safety department to condemn private properties that have yet to be repaired or rebuilt, demolish the structures, then initiates a process leading to the potential “expropriation” of such lands by the New Orleans Redevelopment Authority (N.O.R.A.).

Holy Ground Church Razed: Reverend Adams Fights for Justice

Photography by Mavis Yorks
Reverend Louis Adams is one of the many New Orleans residents struggling to rebuild his life and his community in New Orleans. Despite months of fighting through a deluge of red tape, he is strong, and he is determined.

Before Hurricane Katrina, the Reverend ran Holy Ground, a church on Lizardi Street in the Lower Ninth Ward. Prior to the storm, Holy Ground was feeding over 100 people a week. The Reverend had plans to expand the church’s community outreach programs to include services for single parents and people with drug and alcohol abuse problems. He had spent over $60,000 dollars in renovations before the storm.
