Information for Interested School Groups

Wetlands

Common Ground Relief's wetlands restoration project currently collaborates with several nonprofits which have a special focus on developing and implementing wetlands education for school aged children. Since the responsibility of wetlands restoration will be passed on to the next generation, we feel that wetlands education is a central priority. Seminars, educational resources, lesson plans, coloring books and more are available to teachers and administrators who are interested in bringing wetlands into the classroom. Hands-on teaching with a strong restoration and conservation focus characterizes most wetlands education programs.

Common Ground Wetlands Restoration Project maintains a wetlands nursery on Deslonde St. in the Lower Ninth Ward. Student groups are welcome to tour the nursery, where native restoration grasses and trees are cared for. Please give two weeks' notice so that we can plan for your group. Our grasses and trees are ready for replanting this fall, and we will be working with area nonprofits to find a suitable location for replanting. If your school group is interested in being part of these plantings, please contact us as soon as possible. No dates are set for our fall plantings yet, but we would be happy to work with teachers to plan an educational and hands-on experience.
