"Bridge the Economic Gap" Campaign Takes Place Across the Country
Banners will be seen from bridges nationwide
Banners will fly on bridges across America on Tuesday, September 4th in support of the Universal Living Wage. New Orleans will show its support for the Universal Living Wage with a banner at the entrance to the industrial canal bridge at the intersection of Claiborne Avenue and Tennessee st. in the Lower 9th Ward, from 4:30pm to 6pm CS Time. Advocates of the Universal Living Wage believe that anyone working 40 hours per week should be able to afford housing.
September 4th is the National Day of Action to "Bridge the Economic Gap" denying the working poor and homeless from an acceptable, first world standard of living. According to Richard Troxell, Chairman of the Universal Living Wage Campaign, "The Universal Living Wage is not just an attempt to increase the federal minimum wage but to fix it once and for all."
Minimum Wage Increases Don't Go Far Enough
The Universal Living Wage calls for a minimum wage based on the cost of local housing rather than the current system where the minimum wage is standardized from coast to coast. The Universal Living Wage would index the minimum wage to the local cost of housing. This would insure that anyone working 40 hours a week can afford basic rental housing.
US Conference of Mayors Supports Increases
The US Conference of Mayors' reports, the federal minimum wage fails to afford anyone basic rental housing in major cities in America. The 2000 Conference of Mayors' Report describes the federal minimum wage as "the most significant contributing factor of homelessness". About 3.5 million people will experience homelessness this year.
Support Living Wages for every worker, nationwide!
