About The Legal Clinic
As the people of New Orleans strive to reestablish their lives and community in the years after Hurricane Katrina, many are facing overwhelming legal obstacles. Contractor fraud is rampant throughout the city of New Orleans; wrongful home demolition in the midst of the rebuilding process can set a returning resident back by years; and complex documentation requirements for succession, mortgage applications, and rebuilding aid present a significant obstacle for many.
To address these needs, Common Ground Relief has established a free legal clinic in the Lower 9th Ward, the first and only legal resource available in the neighborhood since the storm. The clinic is staffed by a Louisiana-licensed attorney, a paralegal with more than 10 years of experience working with disadvantaged persons and the formerly incarcerated, and a support team of law school student volunteers. Residents can expect to receive a professional assessment of their options and committed, conscientious assistance with paperwork and contacting relevant resources.
Thousands of individuals face overwhelming legal obstacles in the wake of devastating gulf coast storms. Many residents need assistance with issues such as wrongful demolition, succession documentation, mortgage application issues, and contractor fraud as well as all types of civil issues preventing citizens from returning to New Orleans or from rebuilding their homes.
