Volunteers needed to Write, Edit and Layout Breaking Ground News
Breaking Ground, Common Ground's newspaper, needs skilled and unskilled volunteers to help produce a vital publication. We publish relevant stories and images intended to inform residents of the Gulf Coast and Hurricane evacuees with critical news and commentary, resources and humor.
We are not limited to a particular number of roles in this project, and we welcome professionals who want to participate to volunteer.
We ask that before coming to New Olreans, some effort be taken to become informed about breaking news stories and of the rich and complex history that weaves this region together.
Our volunteer positions include news editor and writers, photo editor and photographers, cartoonists, layout designers, copyeditors, and graphic artists.
Through the summer, we will shift the layout of our paper to create a design encouraging investigative articles, feature stories and coverage of art and music.
Breaking Ground volunteers will work as a collective to generate ideas, research and write articles, and distribute 20,000 issues per month during June, July, August and September.
Breaking Ground encourages volunteers to participate for at least one issue start to finish. Shorter term volunteers are encouraged to participate by assisting in distribution, writing articles, or contributing art or photographs. Arriving on or around the first of the month assists us in our organization.
