This September 2010 run for a healthier future!
Common Ground Relief, in partnership with Q50 Coffee, is hosting a 10k race, and all proceeds will go to benefit the Garden of Eatin’ afterschool program at the Dr. Martin Luther King Elementary School in the Lower Ninth Ward.
Common Ground Relief is sponsoring the Garden of Eatin program which is dedicated to teaching students about all aspects of food production, from plant science and nutrition to food systems and sustainability. Students will gain an understanding of how food gets from the farm to their plates and learn which foods to eat and why. Gardens are an excellent resource for these lessons. Kids learn while playing. The lessons of our garden are especially important for kids at MLK as the urban blight in their neighborhood makes it difficult to access healthy foods. The Food Store is the only store in the area that sells groceries- and most of these are snack foods and beer. By gaining the tools and knowledge to grow their own food, students can make informed decisions about their diets and become stewards of their environment, contributing to the renewal of their own neighborhood.
Q50 is proud to continue its history of supporting philanthropic causes through its races. In 2008, Q50Ultras threw a race here in New Orleans to contribute to the efforts to fight childhood obesity. The upcoming 2010 race will continue their commitment to the health of children here in New Orleans. With experience hosting races around the world, Q50 is able to offer enjoyable experiences for runners who love to race! If you aren’t a runner, consider supporting this cause by purchasing the Common Ground Relief blend. A delicious Nicaraguan coffee produced by fairly paid workers- all proceeds go to support Common Ground Relief.
