Common Ground Relief shifts to rebuilding

I took a trip recently to the Lower 9th Ward to see the model home built by Common Ground Relief Inc., the local nonprofit best known for providing food and water within days after Hurricane Katrina and organizing volunteers for gutting. Now, it's transitioning from relief to rebuilding across the metro area.

Don't get me wrong: The almost-finished raised house was great -- three bedrooms including a huge master, open living/dining/kitchen area with granite countertops, lots of natural light and nice millwork. And Common Ground Relief's focus is on homes that can be customized -- no cookie cutters here.

People to People Ambassador Programs is also helping New Orleans rebuild this summer with its educational travel program called “Remembering Hurricane Katrina” www.peopletopeople.com/katrina. This unique travel experience takes place June 28 – July 6, 2010 and gives participants an opportunity to take an active part in a number of community service projects to impact the citizens of New Orleans. The program also features NFL quarterbacks Peyton and Eli Manning, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and award-winning filmmaker Spike Lee.

The Tiny Circus with the support and help of Common Ground Relief setup a multi-class animation workshop at Dr Martin Luther King Charter Elementary School in the Lower 9th Ward.

Students worked with the theme "I am the History and Future of My People". Symbols were chosen to represent this title and then words were assigned to each symbol - and this is the result!

Common Ground Relief, in partnership with Q50 Coffee, is hosting a 10k race, and all proceeds will go to benefit the Garden of Eatin’ afterschool program at the Dr. Martin Luther King Elementary School in the Lower Ninth Ward.

Harry Shearer plays Jeopardy, wins for Common Ground Relief

Congratulations to Harry Shearer, the New Orleans-based actor, comedian, radio host and musician, for his fantastic win on Jeopardy's "Celebrity Invitational." After correctly answering the Final Jeopardy question he raised $50,000 for Common Ground Relief, and is now through to the Semi-Finals of the competition, to be held in May 2010.
